Zone 2 Newcastle wins Inaugural John Smith OAM Shield

With a powerful performance in the final round on the morning of the second day, Newcastle has won the inaugural John Smith OAM Shield.

Your Zone 15 Side fought hard but could not win a rink.   Darren Morrison's side of Luke Rash, Jeff Watson, James Cook and himself, lost by one shot.   Pat Reynold's side of himself and Mitch McDonnell, Chayne Edwards and Paul Williams also lost by one shot.  Lee Trethowan's side of Nathan Malloy, Shane Gibbin, Zac Robertson and himself, lost by 2 shots.   The other four of Warren Power,  Damien Gouw, John Hannan Jnr and Josh Zephyr lost by 7 shots, but that included a 7 in the last few ends.

Accordingly and perhaps appropriately, John Smith presented the inaugural John Smith OAM Shield to Mark Conway the President of Zone 2.   In another milestone for John on the day.  Jason Pietraszek was presented with a special award for becoming the player who has played the most representative games for Newcastle District.  Jason's 268th game today exceeded the 267 games that John Smith has played for Zone 2.

Zone 15 did come 2nd, just.  We finished on equal points with Zone 6 but Zone 15 had a better margin.

It should be remembered that we were very luckly to play the event as the rain may have been very heavy elsewhere but not at Halekulani.  Our particular thanks to Halekulani's Head Green Keeper Mitch McDonnell who was able to present excellent greens in very trying conditions and Bowls Coordinator James Cook whose preparatory planning  ensured that everything ran smoothly.  BBQ bacon and egg rolls for breakfast were excellent as were the lunches that were served on time and quickly.
