Ryan Dixon – a Davistown Success Story.

Ryan Dixon’s success in winning a Bronze Medal Games for Norfolk Island at the 2018 Commonwealth caps a very successful Lawn Bowls career.
He came into bowls via the renowned “Davo Muddies” – local lore has it that he was called from the Club’s TAB to make up the numbers one evening and so began his love of the game. His own story is that he was most influenced by his Grandfather – Graeme Dixon – who explained to him that “Bowls is the most strategic and competitive sport known to man.” One of Ryan’s first games was to play in the Club Triples with Graham and his father Rob – another Muddies starter. They did not win but Ryan has the wonderful memory of playing bowls alongside a man he admired and respected.
The rest, as they say, is history.
His record at Davo is writ large-
  • 2007 – Club 4s Champion
  • 2008 – Minor singles Champion
  • 2008 – Zone 15 Presidents Reserve Singles Champion
  • 2009 – Club Pairs Champion
  • 2010 – Club Major Singles Champion
He then moved to Norfolk Island and has represented them continuously at major events:-
  • World Bowls Indoor Singles - 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016. Warilla, NSW
  • World Bowls Champion of Champions - 2014. Christchurch, N.Z.
  • World Bowls Champion of Champions - 2016. Helensvale, QLD.
  • Pacific Games, Port Moresby, PNG – 2015. Skip, triples and fours
  • Asia Pacific Games. 2016. Christchurch, NZ. Qualified for World Bowls Championships in singles and pairs. Most notable victory in singles- Ryan Bester.
  • World Bowls Championships 2017. Christchurch, NZ. Played singles and pairs. Most notable victory in singles - Shannon Mc Ilroy ( eventual World Champion )
  • Commonwealth Games 2018. Gold Coast, QLD. Skip in triples, third in fours. Bronze medalist in triples over Canada.
Continuing the family tradition, Ryan introduced his daughter Ellie, aged 12, to bowls and they were successful in winning the recent Norfolk Island Club Mixed Triples Championship.
His career is by no means over – we expect there will be more successes – and we will watch with great interest the continuation of the family tradition in this wonderful sport.
