Archives - Miro Perovic

For 64 year old Miro Perovic the competitive spirit remains as keen as ever and he was rewarded in 2013 by winning a number of major bowls titles and being named the Central Coast Bowler of the Year.
The family name of Perovic is well known amongst the supporters of St Kilda and Carlton football clubs and whilst Miro never quite reached the dizzy heights of AFL stardom like his cousin Val, he is just as competitive and is a keen sportsman at heart.
Miro was brought up in Ballarat Victoria after his family migrated to Australia from Croatia in 1957     and as a youngster he played all types of sport including athletics, cycling, soccer and his extra height was in demand on the basketball court. As an adult, he finally pursued Aussie Rules as his main sport playing in the Ballarat competition, which in those days was the recruiting area of the St Kilda F C.
Miro’s introduction to lawn bowls was through the annual “International Open Bowl’s Day” where all different nationalities were encouraged to wear their national colors and participate in an open competition at the local bowling club. He and his brothers and cousin made up a formidable team and were successful most years in keeping the local Aussie bowlers in their place. But Aussie Rules took priority and it was a few years down the track before he played pennants at the Victoria Bowling Club in Ballarat and started winning club and district championships. He was ultimately invited to trial for the State side and finished up representing the Big V on 37 occasions.
He eventually left Victoria in the early 1990’s and moved around country areas  working in Sporting Clubs and coaching Aussie Rules. He discovered the Central Coast in 1994 and initially spent time at The Entrance B C. He then returned to Victoria for a number of years before returning to Terrigal where he has been the Operations Manager of Club Terrigal for the past few years.
Whilst at Terrigal he has represented the club in their No1 Pennant side, won his share of Club Championships and represented the Zone on numerous occasions.
But like a good wine Miro keeps on getting better and 2013 was a vintage year winning his Club Major Pairs and Fours along with the Zone 15 Senior Singles, Senior Pairs with David Limbrick and the Zone 15 Open Triples with Adam Pinkerton and Peter Freestone.
He was also a quarter finalist in the State Senior Singles and a semi-finalist in the State Senior Pairs played at East Maitland B C.
Miro was also a member of the Zone 15 Senior side that played in the NSW State Senior Inter-Zone Championship at Ballina.
The highlight of his year was being selected to represent NSW in the Australian Senior Sides Championships played at Belmont B C in Geelong Victoria. This side went on to win the 2013 Australian Senior Sides Championships.
The final accolade was being named a finalist in the NSW Senior Bowler of the Year category at the 2013 Bowls NSW Players Awards.
For Miro Perovic , 2013 was a year to cherish and a year to proudly look back upon.
